Business Integration with Mediator
OPTIMIZING DISTRIBUTED PROCESSES
Distributed business processes require applications which transcend company borders to exchange data and use one another’s services. These processes can be more easily implemented and aligned if a service and connection catalog enables the process-centered control of technical system integration scenarios at an abstract level.
The need for automated system integration based on a service-oriented architecture (SOA) is a result of the following factors:
- Reusability of solutions
- High level of system adaptability
- Cost efficiency
- Creation of transparent structures
- Integration of isolated sources of information
REQUIREMENTS
- Structured modeling and simple linking of business processes in IT
- "Governance" of complex and expanding IT and system integration scenarios
- Simple, rapid maintainability of the integration solution
- Appropriate level of complexity instead of technical "Overkill"
- High-performance, robust and secure operation
- Low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
- Performance and scalability
- Flexibility in choice of transmission media and message formats,
as well as simple formulation of transformation rules - Managerial and technical monitoring of business processes
- Consideration for all stakeholders (management, specialist departments,
- IT development team, integration partners, IT operations, QA)
- Publication of the services on the intranet / Internet
Westernacher Mediator - Overview
- Westernacher Mediator is a service broker that enables you to implement completely
new forms of process and system integration. - Communication takes place via service requests. Service definitions and integration
scenarios are stored in the central repository. This repository contains all the meta
data which the service broker needs for message transmission and transformation
and for dealing with the different media types. - Westernacher Mediator uses XSL, Java and XQuery conver-sion technologies to cover a
wide range of applications. UN/EDIFACT processing and connectivity to SAP are integral
Mediator features, and no additional programming is required to convert EDIFACT to
SOAP and vice versa. - Other message processing functions include schema validation, filtering and an authorization concept. All sensible combinations of message format and
transmission media are permitted. - Processes can be carried out synchronously or asynchronously and in accordance with
the predefined integration scenarios. As well as the "Push" scenario, Westernacher
Mediator also includes a "Request / Reply" that enables e.g. the simple integration of
Internet marketplaces. - The integrated "Publish / Subscribe" feature provides a simple way to create items such
as master data centrally and to distribute them to a number of recipients. - Westernacher Mediator enables individual departments to align their business scenarios
efficiently to the company’s strategies and to tailor them to market requirements.
The IT development team is able to implement the departments’ specifications quickly and
economically. - IT operations benefit from a stable, scalable and high-performance SOA platform, while
consistent standardization keeps the complexity of the integration layer to the bare minimum.

Westernacher Mediator is the result of many years of experience
collected during numerous large integration projects. It provides
an efficient SOA which meets the practical requirements.
- Quick and flexible design,
modification and evaluation of
distributed business processes - Transparent, comprehensible
navigationthrough all views
and relationships of the system
integration - Protection of existing
investments through the
combination of common
base products - UN/EDIFACT and SAP
Connectivity "on board" - Synchronous and asynchronous
message processing - Encapsulation of the technical
integration level, resulting in
reduced complexity for the user - Self-documentation through
repository-based configuration - Service-oriented monitoring,
accounting and error
management based on the
collected statistics data
from the repository - Traceability of all configuration
changes and consistent
versioning - Fine-grained authorization and
security concepts - Deployment of configuration
changes at runtime - Adaptive load response and
prioritization - Platform-independence through
Java and Web GUI, support for
all JDBC-enabled databases
and JMS-enabled message-
oriented middleware (MOM)
